Intan Bakery
With sheer perseverance, passion, and grit, Intan, the ever-smiling individual, is both hardworking and talented.
The nickname Intan means 'diamond' in Malay, and was given to her affectionately by her husband. She lives up to her name of not bowing down under pressure and finding her shine.
In 2019, when our family was struck by an unexpected turn of events and Covid started, Intan rose to the challenge of supporting us. She invested time in building her skills in baking and sewing by attending training sessions conducted by community development agencies such as Beyond Social Services. She honed her project management and marketing skills through baking and stitching projects with ‘Bakers Beyond’ and ‘Sew Can We’, which are both livelihood initiatives managed by Beyond. Intan is now able to independently lead projects. Moreover, she learnt English through family and community classes she attended, which helped her overcome her initial nervousness about connecting with people.
In 2021, we decided to register with ACRA and set up a family home-based business called Intan Bakery, where we offer a variety of delicious baked goods and hand-sewn accessories, ranging from bags to cup holders to scrunchies, several of which are upcycled! We primarily sell through stalls at events organised by community organisations and support groups. While our income is inconsistent, Intan's enthusiasm never fades, and as a family, we do our part to keep the business growing
Many customers praise and love her work, whether it's the taste, freshness, and flavour of her baked goods, or the quality of the craftsmanship of her hand-sewn products. In the long-term plan, we aspire to open a brick-and-mortar store one day, while our baby steps are focused on growing the business through word of mouth and online sales.
We hope to offer a wider variety of delectable goods and more stylish, unique products!
